Featured project - Whangaparaoa Training Centre weed control and revegetation

Project: Control of weeds, revegetation and management of coastal defence area.

Client: The Royal New Zealand Navy

In early 2004 Te Ngahere won a contract to implement a series of ecological restoration works on 175ha of defence land adjacent to Shakespeare Regional Park.

Service requirements included:

control of high priority weed species throughout the reserve
revegetation of specified light wells, coastal grasslands and wetland areas
monitoring of weed control sites and revegetation areas
working with the Navy, the local community and adjacent landowners ( ARC and RDC ) to manage Whangaparaoa headland in an integrated manner
gathering, recording and analysis of information relating to the presence of invasive weeds
first class health and safety measures / processes

Within the reserve high priority species including ginger have been reduced to zero density, due to the success of a thorough control and monitoring programme.
